Water Flow Explanation: As the fish continue to live in our aquaponics system, they'll excrete waste which will be broken down by bacteria. The nutrients for this waste will, in turn, be used by the plants, filtering the water in the process. Our plants will be growing in rockwell grow cubes, which will ensure that the seeds don't drown in our system. They also promote faster initial rooting for our plants. These grow cubes will be placed in the individual cups of hydroton, which are beneficial for a number of reasons. The hydroton has many pores which serve well for the water retention/drainage of the system, preventing overflow. In addition, the hydroton is pH neutral, sterile, and a good addition of aeration to the plants' roots. We've added a water pump to our aquaponics system in order to constantly circulate the water. This way, water will always be flowing into and out of the cups of hydroton. When the fish excrete, these nutrients will flow into the cups and be taken up by the hydroton and grow cubes, feeding these nutrients to the plants directly. The plants will then act as a filter for the system, using these nutrients for their own growing processes and leaving clean water behind. The water pump ensures that nutrient-rich water is always available for the plants to filter.
